HOW TO COMPARE CRAFT INSURANCE QUOTES

It’s natural to look at price, but it’s just as important to understand what’s actually protected.

  • Does the policy understand craft businesses?

Craft insurance should be designed for makers, stallholders and small creative businesses. Check that your policy covers the specific activities you do, such as selling at markets, fairs, workshops or online.

  • Are your tools, stock and equipment covered properly?

Lower cost policies often limit cover for tools, materials, and finished stock. Check whether your stock is covered at the retail value, or for the cost of the materials. Are your tools covered at replacement value or depreciated value? And are they covered where you need them to be covered, ie, at craft fairs with you.

  • Are there any special limits imposed on what you’ve insured?

Sometimes ‘special limits’ can significantly decrease the amount you think you’re covered, especially when it comes to your stock.

  • What excess will you pay if you claim?

A lower premium often means a higher excess if you need to claim. Make sure the excess is affordable and clearly explained.

  • Are there any quiet exclusions?

Are ALL of your crafts covered? Some insurers have specific exclusions on unexpected products, eg, perfumes, rooms sprays, diffusers, carpet fresheners, products for children, pet products, so don’t assume, always check.
